Fall is upon us here in the northeast. The air is crisp and cool in the evening. Leaves are changing colors and beginning to drop. Squirrels are stashing acorns for a snowy winter. Apples and pumpkins are ripe and awaiting our pickin’ trip.
It’s a beautiful time of year! Bring the feeling of fall into your home by changing your kitchen décor to match with the tones and sensations of autumn. Add fall flair and autumn warmth to the most important room of your house.
First ask yourself, what sights, sounds, and scents do you most associate with fall? Your personal taste should be your guide through updating your kitchen décor for fall.
There’s a reason the kitchen is the heart & hearth of the home. It’s where we build connections with our family with food and laughter, where we break bread together, where we carve our pumpkins, and where we get messy making cookies. Be inspired by your warm, loving autumn memories when choosing your fall kitchen design scheme.
Scent is one of the most powerful senses, strongly tied to memory and emotion. If you’re someone who bakes a lot, your kitchen likely takes on the scents of fall naturally. Apple pie spices, anyone? For the rest of us, candles help us breathe warmth into cool spaces. Replace tropical, beachy smells with the warm spicy scents of cinnamon, vanilla, and pine. In our opinion, the more candles (safely) about, the better.
Towels, potholders, oven mitts, tablecloths, cloth napkins and runners – a quick way to make a seasonal change in your kitchen is to change the fabrics. It’s an easy way to shift the tone without investing a ton. With fall colors like burnt orange, umber, golden yellow, mossy green, and crimson, you’ll gather the autumn air. These moody shades are more fall-ready than the bright and bubbly primaries of summer. Fabric type can be fun to consider too. Burlap, gauze, flannel, plaid, and quilted materials make the room feel warm and cozy as the air starts to chill.
The beauty of fall comes about from nature’s changes. Acorns, pinecones, pumpkins and other gourds, apples, leaves, and bare branches all find their place in a kitchen decorated for fall, amid fall-blooming floral arrangements. If you like a bit more whimsy, squirrels, owls, turkeys, and other forest creatures are fun additions. Hang a wreath over the kitchen sink, wrap an orange ribbon around the cookie jar, and arrange seasonal items in an overflowing bowl as your own version of a cornucopia. ‘Tis the season to bring the inspiring outdoors in!
If you’re looking for more of an impactful change, make a splash by decorating the back of your cabinets with a loud, fall-themed sticky wallpaper. You can also do this behind open shelves to make an accent wall or to playfully line the bottom of drawers. It doesn’t take much to cut pieces to size for inside cabinets or to remove shelves and adorn an entire kitchen wall. Create an eye-catching, DIY accent for fall that you can change out just as easily for winter. We’re thinking giant orange and yellow leaves, red apples, or brown birds flying on a forest green background. Don’t be afraid to try something new – there’s no commitment with removeable décor!
It’s time to crank the oven up and get baking – cookies, breads, cakes, puddings, and pies. It’s hard to want to bake anything in the summer with the heat baring down upon us. With the crisp autumn air, now is the time to get baking in earnest. Create a useful, yet decorative, bake station. Gather up your flour, sugar, salt, spices, baking powder, baking soda, measuring spoons, rolling pin, cookie cutters, and bake-centered cookbooks. Arrange on a wooden tray that will stay easily in reach. You may be more inspired to bake pumpkin bread if your baking trappings are close at hand.
