If Your Home Had New Years’ Resolutions

It’s that time of year when we start setting goals for the new year and asking, What do I want for the New Year? Our homes are the center of our lives, our family shelter, our haven for memories, and the place we feel most ourselves. While we’re deciding on our New Years’ Resolutions, we can’t help but wonder about our homes. If these walls could talk, what would their New Years’ Resolutions be?

Top 5 New Years’ Resolutions for Homeowners

1. Resolve to be safer.

From fire safety to cold weather prep, our homes would resolve to be safer. Charge up the fire extinguishers, change the batteries in the smoke alarm, upgrade the security system, identify safe exits from every room, and check the banisters and stairways for weak spots.

Our homes keep us safe from all kinds of dangers. They’d resolve to be safer for our families.

2. Resolve to be energy efficient.

Smarter appliances make our lives easier, but now so many more things draw on power sources than ever before. We have smart mirrors, smart door bells, smart beds, all accessing your home’s power source. It’s more important than ever to change our incandescent bulbs for long-lasting energy efficient LEDs, install light timers or sensors, unplug appliances when not in use, and have the heating and cooling systems inspected, cleaned, and upgraded.

Our homes serve as the central hub of our daily lives. They’d resolve to use energy more efficiently so we could conserve our utilities.

3. Resolve to be prepared.

Preparation comes in many forms. Be it restocking necessary food, health, and safety supplies, building up an emergency fund, or keeping important information all in one place, preparation saves you necessary time and stress when you need it most. Preparation isn’t all for emergencies either – it can be for fun stuff too, like keeping a wish list for trinkets or notes on upgrades you’d like to make in the future.

Our homes hold space for us in the best of times and worst of times, now and for the future. They’d resolve to be fully stocked with everything, especially for the just-in-case and what-ifs.

4.  Resolve to be healthier.

When we’re feeling unwell, we stay home to rest and heal. We need restful places to breathe clean air and drink fresh water. We need fresh food prepared in clean, safe areas, and exposure to allergens, pests, mold and mildew limited as much as possible.

Our homes create a safe haven for us when we’re not feeling our best. They’d resolve to upgrade or install air and water filtration units, to keep highly trafficked areas clean, and to abide by food expiration dates and keep items labeled appropriately.

5. Resolve to be more organized.

Organization means different things to different people. One person’s clutter is another person’s treasure. The aim of organization is to make spaces functional, make the necessary easy to access, and limit the unnecessary from getting in the way of things.

Our homes function best with the right balance of stuff. They’d resolve to eliminate overspending on the unnecessary and to invest in proper storage solutions for particularly cluttered spaces or collections.
