Everyone knows that bathrooms can be messy and cluttered. When you think about décor and design, the bathroom is likely not the first room that comes to mind. Even the most appointed, professionally designed bathrooms can become disorganized easily, especially in a shared space. Sometimes a cluttered bathroom is the result of a lack of storage options and sometimes it’s simply flawed design choices.
As you and your entire family often start and end the day using the bathroom, it’s vital to consider it in your design decisions as one of the most important rooms in the house. Aim to create a sense of soothing calm and functional organization that will start your day off right, then help you transition into a restful night’s sleep.
Here are 15 things to consider when making your bathroom a more beautiful, functional living space for the whole family:
Standard bathroom storage includes an undersink cabinet and, often, a medicine cabinet and/or etagere. There’s always room for more. Installing ladder shelving or high, floating, open shelving to make use of vertical space. Consider corner shelving or install shallow behind-the-door shelving for quick access to health and beauty products.
Ideally, every drawer in our house would be customized to our storage needs for smart storage solutions. Customization helps keep everything in its place. For example, deep drawers lined with heat-proof material are great for hot tools, particularly drawers that have electrical plugs installed. But, reasonably speaking, custom drawers aren’t an option for everyone – so make use of standard-fit drawer organizers instead to accommodate all.
A built-in laundry drawer helps prevent piles of laundry from collecting on the floor and, if this is your particular cluttered eyesore, then this is definitely worth considering. Laundry drawers are built into bathroom cabinetry and can even open to a laundry chute, guiding dirty clothing to a bin near the washer, if your bathroom is directly above your laundry area. Corral dirty clothes without taking up space and only see the laundry when you’re ready to tackle it.
Mini refrigerators are a more recent innovation in the bathroom design space, as small appliances have become easier to mass produce and more energy efficient. This might be especially useful if you take regularly or store refrigerated medicines, or if you find yourself craving a fresh juice with your morning shower or white wine with your evening bath.
Most standard under-sink bathroom cabinets don’t have shelving options, making them a blank slate for your choice of storage option. If you split the cabinet in half, for example, you can organize a basket of cleaning supplies below a basket of bottles and jars or clean towels on the top. Be mindful that with small children in the home, you’ll need cabinet locks to ensure the cleaning and health products are always out of reach.
When you see bathroom design in magazines, there are nearly NEVER any products visible on the countertops or shelves. You may be tempted to get a polished look by placing everything out of sight and out of reach, which can work for a guest bathroom. In the main bathroom, however, daily use products should always be within arm’s reach and organized in a countertop basket or tray. The easy access point ensures no one is sifting and shifting stored goods, and encourages they’re returned to their place.
There are a lot of tiny metal grooming objects that we use on a regular basis – clippers, trimmers, bobby pins, etc. A magnetic strip carefully placed below the medicine cabinet keeps all of these objects in easy reach and saves you the hassle of rummaging drawers. Magnetic hooks can also make for excellent jewelry holders.
Are you making good use of your linen closet? Most homes have a small closet located outside the bathroom, designed for towels and excess toiletries. Use this spot to store bath toys, shower shoes, even a laundry basket. (It’s also a great place to store bed sheets!)
Take down curtains and curtain rods. Replace them with light-diffusing privacy film. You’ll bring more natural light into the space while maintaining necessary privacy and make the room appear larger. If you have cleaning concerns as well, privacy film eliminates the need to continuously launder fabrics that are exposed to moisture and mildew.
Empty the medicine cabinet and place name tags on the back panel, which are only seen when an item is removed. When everything is properly stored, you’ll see no labels for design’s sake. When something is missing or misplaced, it’ll be obvious right away. (This is great for inventory too when you make a supply run.)
Big impact, low effort. By hanging a few additional hooks you help contain towels, robes, discarded or to-be-worn clothing. We recommend the removable kind which are easier to place and re-place without damaging the walls.
Choose clear bins to keep everything in place if you’re more concerned with organization. Choose opaque, similarly colored bins if you’re more concerned with achieving that spa-like Zen appearance. Then label every bin. Bonus points if you use chalkboard stickers and write in chalk, or use removable vinyl stickers to be able to adapt your bins as needed.
This tip is about organization and style – and safety. Heat tools like curling irons, blow-dryers, and straightening irons can be damaging to countertops and be extremely space consuming on the counter. Attach a wire basket to the side of your bathroom cabinet, and be mindful not to hang the basket too close to a water source.
Choose storage jars or bins that are equal in size for a more designer, less eclectic look, unless you like that sort of thing. You’d be amazed at the difference it can make. Then bring on the hodge-podge of found containers!
Streamline shelving and fixtures for a seamless look that flows throughout. Use one metal tone –silver, copper, matte black or something else, for everything - from the towel bars, to the drawer handles, to the shower head.
Small changes make a big impact. Don’t let the looming clutter or persistent mess stop you from making incremental progress toward a functional, beautiful space. If the job is too big to tackle at once, focus on one area – one drawer, one shelf, one counter or cabinet – and set your intention. Don’t aim the change everything in one day. Spend one hour getting all of the bottles on one shelf cleaned and neatly stocked away. You’ll feel accomplished and motivated to organize something else on another day.
