Warming Up Your Décor Choices for Winter

While holiday décor may be the crowning design achievement for most homeowners each year, you don’t have to create a flashy, twinkling winter wonderland in order to amp up the comfort and warmth of your space. In the winter, great seasonal décor can enhance your feelings of coziness. Your home does not have to be magazine-worthy in order to benefit from a curated, weather-appropriate shift indoors.

Hygge, Brought to you by Cold-Weather Experts

The Danish Hygge tradition is definitely not as trendy as it has been in the recent past, but there’s no doubt that it is positively comfy for cold weather design. Danes combine cozy blankets and rugs, twinkling fairy lights, and seasonally appropriate servingware to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Perhaps unexpectedly, Hygge also suggests switching out heavier curtains for more delicate, translucent fabrics to encourage natural light while maintaining privacy.

Embrace Plushy Feelings

From thick shag carpets and faux fur rugs, to plush fuzzy blankets, embrace the plushy options to guarantee that you stay warm and your vibe does too. Keep a basket next to your sitting area to ensure soft blankets are always within reach but not cluttering seating areas for family and friends.

Colorful Jewel Tones

A rich, warm palette can bring an inviting and intimate quality to your space, especially in the depth of winter blues. Choose tones like eggplant purple, burgundy red, emerald and forest green, sapphire navies and dusky marigold yellows. These colors bring a grounded sense of comfort to your design. You can go maximalist and mix them all or choose one or two and balance with light-colored neutral counterparts. Avoid gray as a primary, as it tends to feel colder.

Textured Approach

Luxurious velvets, soft knits, cozy flannels and wispy chiffons all complement each other, especially in the colder months. Curate warming décor by utilizing a mix-and-match approach to textural fabrics. Be open to adding new textural details, because you cannot have too many options in the winter. Consider new kitchen seat cushions, sofa covers, lamp shades, and runners.

Curated Lighting Options

A cozy evening by the fire is the standard for a winter’s night. There are many options on the market now for smart fireplaces – LED space-heaters, entertainment-fireplace combinations, even dining table integrations. If a real or faux fireplace is not in your future, consider adding LED candles of any variety for that flickering, warm fire look, or simply change out your daylight bright bulbs to warm glowy soft white and change the entire atmosphere with ease.
